Kostku yang baru di Setiabudi memiliki fasilitas TV kabel dari Kabelvision. Mulanya luar biasa senang melihat 50 channel dalam sebuah TV. Terbayang betapa senangnya menyaksikan CNN, Discovery, AXN dan tayangan kelas dunia lainnya. Namun ternyata setelah hampir seminggu menikmati, ternyata TV kabel tidaklah seindah kelihatannya.

Beberapa hari belakangan ini, -karena sakit demam- aku menghabiskan banyak waktu menyaksikan TV kabel. Dan dari segi acara National Geographic, AXN, Echannel ternyata biasa saja. Beberapa acara yang bagus justru pada bertabrakan dengan primetime di televisi lokal. Berita-berita yang disiarkan oleh CNN atau BBC ternyata juga disiarkan dengan sangat baik oleh Metro atau ANTV. Lalu aku berpikir apa bedanya memiliki TV kabel atau tidak.

Memang ada beberapa acara yang memang sangat baik seperti ulasan tentang Saddam Husein di Discovery. Atau tentang sejarah perang dunia di National Geographic. Tapi tayangan itu hanya berapa persen dari keseluruhan acara yang ada dalam TV kabel. Dan sebagai pekerja yang ’sibuk’, untuk apa membuang waktu sia-sia menyaksikan acara yang mengulas dengan sangat dalam itu. Bukanlah lebih baik digunakan istirahat atau atau menyaksikan acara yang lebih ringan pengantar tidur.

Industri TV kabel di Indonesia
Saat ini ada tiga pemain di TV berlangganan. Yang pertama adalah Kabelvision, anak perusahaan dari Lippo group. Mengklaim memiliki pelanggan terbesar di Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung dan beberapa kota besar lainnya. Kabelvision menggunakan koneksi Fiber optik dan Coax cable. Daerah yang sudah dibangun jaringan Kabelvision-nya tentunya menjadi mudah untuk mendaftar berlangganan. Disinilah keunggulan kabelvision, dan tentunya kemampuan koneksi internetnya hingga 256Kbps

Yang kedua adalah Indovision. Indovision yang merupakan group dari MNC yang membawahi RCTI ini (CMMIW). Menggunakan parabola sebagai media koneksinya. Sehingga Indovision bisa menjangkau daerah luar jawa seperti Makassar, Jayapura hingga Medan.

Dan yang terakhir baru bermain adalah Astro dari Malaysia, hampir sama seperti Indovision menggunakan parabola. Astro yang sempat bermasalah dalam hal perijinan operasi ini konon memiliki jumlah tayangan paling sedikit. Agak bertolak belakang dengan iklan di TV-nya yang menggebu-gebu belakangan ini.
